Hand built track

I want to build some of my own track to 9mm gauge but with narrower flangeway clearances to get some better quality running across points since some of my vehicles derail on peco points : ( I have been to the 2mm site but I'm not sure whether code 40 rail height will be too small at 1mm for some of my stock but I can't find a UK supplier of code 55 rail (1.4mm high). One place in Canada had good prices but delivery was about =A350 on the =A340 order! Has anyone here built 9mm gauge track from code 40 rail and can testify that the flanges on newer n gauge RTR models don't touch the sleepers when running? Alternatively does somebody know a UK supplier of code 55 naked rail? TIA Luke

Luke,

If you can put up with 5 thou more, Peco do a Code 60FB(1L-1) which has a very good profile. Places like Mainly Trains stock it off the shelf. Comes in 24" lengths.

You can cure this by rewheeling with wheels that don't hiccup at these points. However, if and when you build turnouts to finer standards, you will have to rewheel all the rolling stock that has coarser wheels. Not a problem with wagons and carriages, but can be expensive with locomotives.

You could also make nasty noises at the manufacturers about their inconsistent and coarse wheel profiles. When I read the reviews of UK rolling stock in some UK model mag I buy occasionally, I note that the mfrs don't use consistent wheel standards even on their own product. Incredible!

Code 40 rail works just fine if you use the finer wheel profiles. Also make sure that all wheelsets are in gauge. Never assume that wheelsets are perfect.

Sorry to butt in, but I am a newbie and have a similar problem with two carriages and a loco tender on one particular set of points. All the other rolling stock works fine. The problem rolling stock is a pair of SR passenger coaches and the tender of a Fowler 4F loco all N gauge from Graham Farish. Can you suggest where I would obtain improved wheels please?

Thanks for that. Yes, the wheels are clean, the coaches are both hardly used from new as I am still in the building process. I will dig around in the tool cupboard for my old mechanical slide gauge and check the measurements out.

Perhaps the N Gauge Society? You need to be a member to buy from their shop, but it's well worth it.

Nice one. I will check it out.

I had the same problem with Peco's and short 4 wheel cars. I glued 0.010 styrene in the face of the guard rails to narrow the gap and it solved the problem. I also covered the plastic frog with 0.020 brass, tack soldered it in place, filed the excess solder out, and it allowed my 4 wheel loco flanges to get powered by rolling on the frog bottom all the way through.

I bought code 70 rail made by ME in the USa from Standard Hobby Supply. I had to buy a minimum quantity, I think 30 yards. I'd suggest you measure the flange depth of a few of your wheel-sets, particularly locos. I'd guess that
