Paint Stripper

Is it possible to remove Humbrol enamels from a plastic bodied loco whilst retaining the original factory finish underneath (and not attacking the plastic, obviously)?

TIA.

This is a bit like "how long is a piece of string?" It depends on the manufacture, and when it was manufactured, and the phase of the moon. I have successfully used that putty stuff (Modelstrip) on a 1980s Hornby loco to get back to the factory finish, but that was probably not Humbrol enamels.

To be honest, your best bet might be to get some brake fluid, Modelstrip and Superstrip, and try each on a small un-obtrusive area.

Modelstrip will certainly remove the Humbrol paint, but various processes were used to finish factory bodies (both paints & inks) and it's not impossible that the factory finish could be affected, although I'd have thought it was unlikely.

Modelstrip will certainly bring some Lima factory finishes off along with the Humbrol top coat, I've just done it.

I remember many years ago trying to strip the factory finish from a Hornby LMS red 2-6-4T and Modelstrip had no effect on it whatsoever.

Oddly enough, the model I was referring to in my earlier post was an old Midland Compound. Modelstrip took off the repaint, and didn't touch the original red or the lining. Must be something about Hornby's Midland/LMS red paint!

Thanks for all the replies. I'll give Modelstrip a go first.
