Tinkering in N

I currently model in OO, but my layout has to get put away too often :-(

I was thinking of putting together a "small" layout in N - I can have a fairly long "shelf" for a couple of lines, but am wondering what the smallest radius would be at either end, so as to get a dog bone type layout.

I also confess to having seen some of the new dapol diesels in N in my local model shop, and want an excuse to a) buy one, and b) build a more modern layout (my OO is steam, 1940-1950 era)

For the British outline modern stuff about ten inch radius technical minimum, 12 inch radius gives reliable running and is definately preferable (requires about 2'3" width), if you have the space eighteen inch radius looks okay in the open. This is roughly the radius of Peco long points and the radius of (I think) the outer curve on Peco curved points.

If you opt for continental outline you can go down to seven and a half inch radius (at least with Fleichman you can) and everything works fine. The modern British outline is, according to the makers, not going to take that and uncoupling will be a problem.
