Chinese welding

I've just repaired a 2 ton engine crane that I got from a chap who had managed to bend the fold down legs that stick under the car. These are each 53" of 70mm square 3mm thick box section that pivots and is retained on pins with 'R clips'. Sensibly the design had tubes welded across the square section where the pins go as re-inforcement, and I thought it worth spending a bit of time recovering the tubes to re-use them in the new legs I was making. To my horror a single tap with a hammer knocked the tubes right out. Zero penetration on the welds !! Needless to say I've been over the rest of it checking where I can

Sound just like most things I try welding with the works welder!

Welded a bracket back onto an axle last week, and the weld looked perfect, except for a lack of undercut. Sure enough, one hit with a hammer and the bracket fell back off, followed by several expeltives! It really does fascinate me, how you can get a weld that looks almost perfect (edges tapered, and not balled like it normally does when it doesn't stick), that has absolutely no penetration. I'm sure there was a sales rep somewhere who was doing alot of smiling when he managed to sell that welder.

I rode a French-made bike in the 70s for a while (St. Etienne, actually) and when I finally got into an accident, the top tube and down tube popped right out of the lugs on the head tube; no brazing at all, just friction and rust holding it together all those years.

Spare tire carriers....sigh.....

Oh, he did, a while back. Something about a tire passing him up as it bounded into the desert with carrier attached. I believe he was using a 110V MIG rig, and pushing past its capabilities in hindsight. He's come a long way since that learning experience (as have some of the rest of us).

I have found this done with Liquid Solder which is aluminum mixed with an acetate plastic.

Ah, a different situation entirely!

My answer was predicated on the welder being working correctly. If that's not the case, all bets are off. :)

One can compensate for _some_ equipment problems, but certainly not all.

I stand corrected.

There was one like that where I work part time. Turned out the whole problem was with the spool tension adjuster. Five minute fix of a weeks long problem. Nobody could weld with that thing for more than a few minutes!

I finally dragged it over to Praxair, where I became thoroughly embarrassed because I'd never thought of that and had actually entirely forgotten it existed!:)
