cutting

Hi

Could somone please instruct me on the best and safest way of cutting, using and anglegrinder, ie which side to have the sidehandle on, and which hand to use to hold which bit of the grinder.

Thanking you in anticipation, Danny

This is assuming you have clamped the material to be cut lying horizontal on a table of some sort...

Some angle grinders have 3 positions for the handle. In this case, put the handle on the top of the grinder (perpendicular to the plane of the cutting wheel.) Grip the handle, holding it even with the horizon--cutting wheel slicing straight down, sparks going straight down. Position the guard so that you can chop all the way through whatever you're cutting. It should protect you from the sparks coming off the underside of the wheel and the sparks that do fly should shoot down-to-forward and clear of your face.

Hopefully you can visualize this.

If your grinder only allows you to attach the handle on one side or the other, pick whatever you're most comfortable with.

You can grab the handle or the front end of the grinder itself to guide the cut. Just make sure you hand is protected by the guard in case you slip up. Steady the back end of the grinder with your other hand.

Some grinders have more than one type of guard that can be fitted to them. My Porter Cable has a cutting wheel guard that is similar to a grinding wheel guard, except that it protects you from both faces of the wheel. This is nice, because you can actually grab the guard to better guide the wheel for a more precise cut.

Always make sure the wheel is rated for the speed of your grinder.

As Jeff said, clamp the work. Right-handed? Hold the body in your right hand, sidehandle in your left. And keep your elbows tight to your body.
