hammock question

I got a hammock. From eye to eye is 11'. My patio supports are about 8' wide, plus or minus. I could use an outside 4x6 support leg, and then attatch the other end to a double stud, but am not sure if the double stud would hold it, or if it would cause the stucco to flex off. I have looked and looked, and there just doesn't seem to be any place to put it where it wouldn't be in the way.

I have 2x8 rafters 24" oc, and 14 feet long. Can a hammock be hung from rafters, or would that make it fold up too much in the middle, hence folding the napping person in half? Could I use steel tubes coming down vertically from the rafters, and then use chains at an angle from the lowest point back up to the rafter?

Some ideas, please.

I'll probably just make a tube steel base for it, but that's just another thing to do and another thing to move around.

Be careful with the "steel tubes" idea. Especially hanging vertically. I have a large hammock and it has two steel tubes on each end and they are probably about 35 or 40 degrees from level. If you decide to come vertically from the ceiling you should probably use steel conduit, black pipe, angle, or something of the kind as opposed to regular tubing. Of course, if the tubing is large enough and has a pretty heavy wall.....

If you come from the ceiling you may want to brace it instead of depending on just the vertical.

Would you be hanging it from ONE rafter or would you be crossing them so you'd distribute the weight across two of them?

If you could put it across the rafters so two are supporting it AND you can get it close to the support wall you should have no problem at all with the weight factor on the rafters.

You WOULD have another object to run into if you support from vertical conduits, etc. as they'd probably need to come almost all the way to hammock.

Hopefully someone else will have a better idea but this is the best I can offer right now. :-)

This might be your best bet.

Not sure you grasped my intent. I would put two tubes vertically that would hold some of the weight. They would in no way be stiffened. They would only hold vertical weight. The tubes would then have chain from their bottom point back up at about a 45 outward from the hammock to the rafter. The load would be triangulated off the rafters, as I would probably span two rafters, make a vee down to the attatchment point, then chain back up to the rafters.
