lead size

I have huge 1/2" 50 foot leads on my little tombstone AC/DC welder. I want to replace these with a more decent size, as I will seldom, if ever, go up to the max 225 Amps. I believe I have 400 or 500 amp leads. I can then sell the huge leads. What is the size of the leads I need (24 foot length)? I once owned a nice AC/DC 220 amp, that had about 1/4" leads (12 foot) and it functioned perfectly. I would like to get the same size again, but I don't know the number.

The actual outside measurement of the cable is not particularly relevant, some of the newer insulations are thinner. You need to get a measurement on the copper itself. cable sizes numbers get smaller with bigger numbers. #2 is bigger than #4, #1 is bigger than #2, etc.

#4 is the smallest (and cheapest)that you could consider. You can use this size if you use only the lower settings (say 125 amps or less), have short cables (less than 20' or so), and have a light duty cycle (burn a rod, tewak and fidle). Seems to me the newer tombstones come with this size on the stinger cable(??)

#2 is your reccomend size for full output at 225 amps and cable lengths under 20-25 feet.

#1 is probably what you have unless some> I have huge 1/2" 50 foot leads on my little tombstone AC/DC welder. I want
