I am not discriminating against cast iron, but the idea that cast iron or steel have better damping properties than other metals is certainly debateable, and in my mind it just aint true. It dosent really matter where you read it. The book is wrong.

And I say this for the same reason that tuning forks are usually made of steel instead of lead. The more malleable a metal is, the more it will damp vibrations. The harder something is, the better it will vibrate - or ring - like a bell.

Which is also why bells are made from bell bronze, one of the hardest nonferrous metals which exists. Otherwise the liberty bell would have been made of lead - maybe wood.

But none fo this really matters as much as the overall design of an object, which is where the objects resonant frequency comes in. It does make a difference. Look at the difficulty of manufacturing a driveshaft. Maybe you have seen a dynamic balancer - without that step many driveshafts would simply snap inexplicably. The same is true of lathes. If the power source is generating an impulse which is a harmonic of the machines natural freq, then the whole machine will start jumping around the shop like a mexican jumping bean. The design is the main factor.

But that dosent address the fact that chineez tools are garbage.

Have you seen the new "micro" lathe that Harbor Freight now sells? I just noticed it in a new catalog a few days ago and it looks pretty good for the price of $200.

Reminds me of a Chineez vise I saw at Menards about 2 years ago. It was kind of broken somehow, and it was still sitting on the shelf about a year later. Last time I checked I think it's still sitting there, because nobody is stupid enough to buy the damn thing.

You guys can laugh about it now while they are still producing junk. You'll be crying when they start producing high quality goods and put the entire westernized world into a depression. I don't agree. Have you bought any "Chinese" tools lately? Many Delta tools are built overseas, they are considered some of the best consumer woodworking tools available. My Jet table saw was made in Asia and it is also rated top notch. My Reliant drill press (floor model) was bought 5 years ago for about $120.00 and it has never given me a bit of problems. Many companies like Sieg (Chinese tool maker) make many different levels of their tools. I'll agree that if you pay $10 for an angle grinder at a tool sale that you shouldn't expect much out of it, but if you use the internet and the millions of tool reviews created by people who have actually bought and used these tools as a guide, you can get some pretty good stuff.

Simply stating that anything made in China is junk is very short-sighted and borders on ignorance.

The USA was a world leader in tool production, we made many of the best machines in the world. Quality was the big concern. As we all know that has changed, we are not a world leader in volume manufacturing we still make some nice stuff. Cost is now the biggest concern in most cases and if people get paid low wages they can make it for less. Most of us will rush to spend our hard earned cash on the best deal. The Import tools have done alot to improve there quality but I can assure you my Delta Unisaw (US made) is more accurate and will outlast any of the current 10" table saws coming in on the ship even if it has the Delta name on it. However one has to think before dumping all there free cash on 1 item when maybe they could get a 3 items. I will say this The USA and imports from long established tool making contries are far better than the Chinnese cookie cutter tools.

I have completely given up on the bastards who have bailed on our economy to seek slave labor in the third world. I refuse to buy their products which are correctly categorized as hereto and forever after junk.

This is why I reccomend to anyone here BUILD YOUR OWN. It will cost a little more, but with the freedom to design as you like you can produce machinery which is SUPERIOR to a Rockwell or any other machinery of WW2 vintage. I'd say that this level of quality could be surpassed quite easily through patience and careful construction. In fact, this discussion gave me an incredible idea for a lathe - possibly a new innovation in machine design. I will not post it publicly, but if you are a regular poster located in the US I would consider sharing it.

Consider buying 5 chinese lathes. They could all break or wear out within 5 years at a cost of around $1,000 to $1,200.

Consider instead purchasing the components a building from scratch something which will last for 200 years minimum. I blelieve that this could be done on a similar budget very easily.

I forgot to mention... I have a 109. It was my first lathe and I had fun with it but one major shortcoming, IMO is that it does not have any index markings on any of the handwheels so I had to measure EVERYTHING! :-(

I have a JET 9 x 20 now so I'm hoping to sell it soon because it's in the way but it has an unusual headstock so I may be better off parting it out on eBay.

I am currently located in Australia. I would be interested in hearing about your idea, if you would be willing to share it with someone from over here. Be warned, I spend at least half my time at work helping build (superior) components for equipment originally manufactured in the US. The nice people I work for also manufacture machine tools. I did a US patent search and found nothing even close. Sounds like you guys share the spirit of building things intended to last. Tell ya what I'll do, because I love your beautiful country and people, I'm gonna have to throw the $80 for a provisional patent, but I'll save your email address and when I get my papers I'll let you guys use it for free.

Speaking of lathes, when I was a kid I got to tour the old Allis Chalmers plant in Wisconsin. They had one of the largest lathes ever built. This thing was huge. The headstock was an enourmous machine, and the tailstock was clear across the room about 50 feet away. I cant remember the exact dimensions, but they made turbines for steam generation plants. I think that the swing was something like 15 feet.

If you need any help with the patent process let me know. A have a good friend that works for a very large patent firm in DC.

Thanks, but you cant beat the price of doing it yourself. $80 for a small entity, non-provisional patent, it's just a big gamble anyway because just having a patent is nothing. You have to find someone who is interested in it. You have to sell it.

You gotta watch some of those patent outfits real close, and then it's still a gamble.
