Welder Specs

Looking at buying a Lincoln SP135 and notice that it is recommended for mild steel up to 3/16" with mig and 5/16" with flux. The 3/16" will handle 90% of what I do, but I have no experience with flux? is it much difference?

Why so much difference in thickness for the same welder?

Thanks

Dan

me (kinda newbie) tried fluxcore in my mig unit, i could not get a nice clean weld for the life of me. i'll stick to "mag" with CO2 and also use

75/25 argon/co2 mix, much nicer and cleaner welds.

you made sure to reverse the polarity?

...and try some ESAB fluxcore "15" and you'll think you are in spray mode. Don't forget DCEN.

my unit cannot switch polarity, probably the issue.

==================== Flux core wire should be used outdoors or with a very good exhaust system indoors if you value your health.

I thought about that after I had sent it.

Are you sure about that? I have an SP 125, which I believe is very similar to the SP 135. Polarity change is accomplished by lifting the side cover, and switching the leads, which are fastened with wing nuts. Nothing could be simpler (except for a polarity switch on the front on the control panel.) The instruction manual shows how to do it.
