welding comments?

I have myself a HarbourFreight 140 stick welder, cost me about $100US. I know, its all I got so I must do with it, for now.

Anyhow, I am looking for comments on my first rod of 7018, running at

100Amps. I have been making a few passes with 6011 at around 85Amps or so and decided to try 7018. Wow, this is a nice rod to weld with.

I had some scrap 4" channel laying around, I ground down the edges to a bevel and clamped the two pieces together. I struck up the 7018 rod and produced the weld in the link:

or look in the welding folder at:

If you look at the left edge, this is where I tacked it together, I ended the weld at this joint.

Any comments?

Should of said right side of image is where I tacked it, not the left side.

Let me try this once again.

I want to clarify my original post.

I tacked both ends, ran my bead from left to right and ended just before my tack at the right side. This weld was 1 pass of 7018 rod @100Amps. I had meant to say I ran some 6011 rod @85Amps on other pieces of scrap to get the feel of this welder. I never welded before but have read a few articles on "how to"

I beveled the edges a bit, not quite a 45, perhaps half the thickness of the metal.

Thanks for your patience.

Very nice looking welds, but the picture resolution made recognizing things a little difficult.

Somebody should tell those electrons they are coming from a HF rig and can't make a pretty weld...

Pour the heat to that 7018! Don't run it cold and keep your electrode in the puddle, if you get it too far back and long arc, you'll cause perosity and spoil the integrity of the weldment. Remember also that it's a position rod and you can run flat or uphill but never down hill. It's a popular rod for steam applications and strong structural welds.
