working time with rosebud tip and O/A tanks.

I am doing some sand bent exhaust headers for a race car. After a few tries and figuring out the tricks, they are coming out quite well. Bending the tube without kinks is the the easy part, once you figure it out - getting the bends right so that the header pipe fits is the (very) hard part...



Anyway, I am using a No. 8 rose bud tip (victor), running at the recommended



10 PSI acetelyne and 20 psi Oxygen. I normally just keep small tanks - one size up from the little carry-around ones - and went through the gas like butter... What kind of "on time" could I expect from the larger sizes of tanks?

Howdy! From my reading on the topic, you may want to consider another form of fuel gas, and regulator setup. It was recomended to me the use of Chemtane 2 as a fuel, or similar, and Oxygen and not acetelyne due to the large cost differences in heat output. We use acetelyne for welding because we nead carbon in the fuel for correct proces I believe, however for heating in all applications except adding filler material to steel, I have read that you get nearly 4 times more "bang" for the buck per se' when other fuel types are used. I would do a search for Chemtane, and other fuel options. You can keep your current tanks too, and use the acetylene for true welding applications as well :) Good luck! Brian Lee Sparkeee24

I have gone through the full size tanks in about five to seven hours straightening /cambering large beams. The actual amount of acetylene is marked on them as being around 25 to 30 pounds of product. You could go to propane and oxy but you need a special fuel gas rosebud. As suggested a product gas such as maap would give you a tighter heat area than propane and might be an alternative. There are also fuel gas tips that are a mini rosebud and they fit on your cutting torch replacing your regular cutting tip. Randy
