Camera for my Plane

Hi!

I'm looking for a camera for my plane. I know, nothing special, there are hundreds of posts for me to search through deja (google groups) with the same request.

But I want something different. I'm not looking for a wireless camera. I want a camera with built in memory (or even better recording to a tape). After the flight I'd get the tape or the memory out and would watch it. So, are there any solutions with a tiny cmos or ccd camera recording the images/video to a memory or tape instead of beaming the data down to a receiver? It should be lightweight and should be able to record for a long time (1+ hours at least).

Does anyone know of such a thing?

Thanks Mike

That 1+ hour is going to be the deal breaker, at least in the affordable category. There are some quality solutions for about $150, with about 10 minutes of onboard memory with good video quality.

I feared it would be like that. I was hoping that there was some module which I can plug my cmos camera in and which will just record the video to a regular tape drive (Hi8, Digital8) or something. Their tapes are very small and can hold hours of video material. Maybe I should go and get an old video camera and just rip the parts out of it :-)))

However, I'll do some more digging around. Maybe I can find a cmos/ccd plus tape recorder solutions.

Thank you! Unfortunately I'm using deja (groups.google.com) currently which does not carry the binary groups. What are you using on your plane? As I said in my initial article, I'm not looking for a wireless solution.

Thanks for your reply Philip - nice work. I'm still looking for a solution with longer recording capabilities, but non the less - impressive.

What is your plane???

If you want Hi-8, I suggest you just get a Hi-8 camcorder and use the "Line In" jack to record from your cmos camera. Beware of radio frequency interference (RFI) from the electronics of the recorder/camcorder getting into your R/C receiver. Do a thorough ground, range check on your equipment. Keep things well separated.

I would also recommend the Bruce Tharp Engineering "Fly'n King as a camera plane. This plane was designed to handle heavy loads and it has a roomy fuselage for Camcorder or still camera use. It will fly slowly enough for excellent ground shots. It will stay in the air over 30 minutes with an O.S. .91, 4 stroke and 16 oz. of fuel. I use one with a wireless system to great effect. Just made a tape of a flight to

1,030' AGL over our field. I used a mountain bike digital altimeter and a second camera to send back the read-out. I could switch between the external camera and the altimeter to document the altitude of the plane (and the view from above). I also use an FMA Co-Pilot to stabilize the platform, the plane gets hard to see above 800'.
