Considering the pilot had made successful flights before, I would suspect the conditions were bad enough to help him into more trouble than he could handle. Which makes them bad regardless how mild they may have seemed.

Read the latest issue of "R/C Report." It has some hard data that shows when a cell phone is answering a call it puts out a lot of RF power while negotiating with the cell tower. Can cause problems.
You can even hear this on your car radio as a series of short buzzes.
