gas engine general queries.

Well, I got the enya V .19 to light up in the vice. Dry cell D and the plug off the 60 was the ticket. Nice response, but it's pretty far from dialed in though.

I did have to put my hand behind it, my polyurethane stock was getting wet. I was thinking some sort of bracket to hold a piece of toast behind the muffler would be useful.

On to the questions,

  1. Is this thing going to get less messy when properly tuned? I might want to get a pusher prop for it if not.

  1. Can I expect to be able to start it with a stick (or a backwards cone snap)? I do like to travel light (lite?).

  2. What affect will winter have on it's startability? It gets to down to
20F regularly. Occasionally much colder.

  1. Any general tuneup/startup/tip items you wish to share on this engine. I assume I can dial in the main mix for max speed (or least mess ;) and do the idle mix/speed dance with the air bleed. What is a reasonable target idle speed? What's a good initial setting for the air and mix screws and which way from there. If you know any of this stuff off the top of your head then great but don't go out of your way 'cuz I'll figure it out eventually.

Thanks, Steve.

It will probably always be messy. Starters save fingers. Starters on pushers are almost a must.

Good luck.

I had an Enya .19 which I traded in a few months ago.

It was a good starter and runner in warmer weather. Started (after priming) with a couple of flicks of the prop, leather glove - no chicken stick. It was easily set up and idled and transitioned very well. Set the main needle first and then set the air bleed and throttle stop for a nice idle speed.

It was a difficult engine to start when the weather got fairly cold, down to around freezing. I couldn't get any glow plugs with an idle bar locally and I suspect that was the problem. A hotter plug (Enya No3 ?) and preferably a plug with idle bar would probably have made a big difference. It seemed as though the glow was being quenched by the cold fuel when the temperature dropped.

I have an OS .15 and their recommendation is for the top of the fuel tank to be only 1/4 to 3/8 above the fuel input nipple on the carb. I would suggest a similar fuel tank position for the Enya as well.

I would have kept the Enya as it was a good runner, (apart from freezing weather) if I had a use for it but didn't need it and traded for a bigger motor.

It was a bit messy due to oil from the front of the engine.. being a plain bearing there is always going to be some leakage there.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. Heres a micro-update.

After looking for suitable pusher props, and finding nothing but some wooden zingers, I looked around a bit and discovered that I can simply unscrew and rotate the front housing ccw 90 degrees to get an engine that runs quite reasonably in REVERSE. I'm marginally concerned about the change in thrust direction. No biggie if it self machines itself into the ground, but if anyone knows the deal then please chime in.

Thanks, Steve

P.S. I've got the plastic gutter pipe and election signs secured :) Has anyone made a decent spad airfoil?
