Hummm...deciding between bolt-on or rubberbanded wings is getting tougher all the time.

  1. I like your idea of matching the wing saddle [with a contoured plywood strengthener on the sides of the fuselage], it will be much stronger, and won't add too much weight.

5 definitely strengthen the rubber band area. I would suggest wrapping the TE with some aluminum cut from a soda can. ==

BOLT-ON WINGS PROS AND CONS



  1. Looks much nicer than rubber bands + dowels.
  2. Less risk of crushing EPP on LE and TE.
  3. Getting wing alignment right is more difficult; once block is in place and holes are drilled, I'm pretty much locked in.
  4. If the wings shear off completely during a cartwheel, I risk having the servo lead wires ripped apart unless I fabricate some kind of teather to keep the wings close to the fuselage (similar to ski straps).
  5. If the hardwood block should split (or if the bolt should break in the block) I'm hosed.
  6. The hardwood block would have to go near the CG, which is right where I'd want to put a ballast area.

RUBBERBANDED WINGS PROS AND CONS



  1. Looks like crap, not at all to scale.
  2. LE and TE where rubberbands intersect have to be strengthened, either with hardwood or aluminum can cutouts (or both).
  3. Cutting out a plywood saddle contour is non-trivial, but adjusting wing alignment and incidence is easy.
  4. Like bolt-on wings, this configuration also needs a teather. One could easily be attached to a graphite or carbon fiber rod used in place of a wooden dowel.
  5. Rubberbands will probably break before the plywood saddle contours break.
  6. The fuselage area surrounding the CG will be empty, so I can cut out a nice ballast area.

Gosh, now that I've enumerated all these issues, maybe I should ditch both ideas and just glue the darn wings on! This will certainly be lighter AND a lot less work...

I would never do that. The plywood would split when you're hit.

Lite-Ply has the strength of balsa and the weight of plywood. It doesn't give, it shatters.

Great idea. Rubber bands cut right through EPP.

My method of one bolt in the center gets around that. The wing is left to pivot around the center-bolt.

Same problem with rubberbands.

I use lead roof-flashing for weight. Just fold the 1/16" sheet and drill a hole in the middle. Use your wing-holddown bolt to secure to plane.

One tumble and the strenthening looks like crap, too.

Not true. The ply would crush on the first hard landing.

You can use the same flashing as above, and fit under the rubber-bands.

This of course is what I've been doing with my combat planes. These PSS foamies are just targets when flying against the wings.

My slope racer uses the single bolt idea and my 1-26 uses aluminum wing-pins.

All right, I'm convinced. I'm going to measure twice, and then glue once. (As for ballast on those really windy days, I'll probably mount a blind nut inside the wing at the CG so I can attach some lead roof flashing to the underside of the wing with a short nylon bolt.)

Thanks for all your feedback. You've helped me travel the gamut of combat foamie wing-mounting options, from A) glue on to B) bolt on to C) rubberbanded then back to D) bolt on and finally back to E) glue on.

(I guess this means I'll have to find another project on which I can use my new AccuPoint laser incidence meter!)
