Questions about anatomy of the anvil

Apr 24, 2006 1 Replies

What is the table of the anvil traditionally used for?.. And, why is the heel on an italian style anvil designed the way it is. That is, what is traditional purpose of this V shaped heel? And, is the heel on a London pattern square mainly for making horse shoes? One end of the shoe fits into the pritchel hole, kept in place, while the other side is worked?

A tapered heel allows you to work shorter stock and make a bend or forging over the far side of the anvil and also be over the near side Or say you needed the piece to look like this but the opening is less than the width of the anvil . llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllll lllllll Another solution would be to have a block to fit the hardy hole or vise to forge over.
