Finally got a batch of panels off the machine and into their finished state. Deep maroon paint, matte, with that repeating star and diamond pattern cut in relief. The way light catches the sharp edges and throws shadows into the recesses is honestly the part I like most about the whole design. Sealed a couple of them, left the rest bare matte, and now I'm second-guessing myself.
Here's my dilemma. The sealed ones pop a bit more up close but under certain angles you get this sheen that flattens the whole 3D effect. The bare ones look sharper and the shadows do more work, but I worry about scuffs and cleaning down the road. These are meant for a feature wall, so they'll get dusted constantly and maybe an occasional wipe. Curious what the rest of you do with decorative work like this. Do you reach for a matte clear coat and accept the slight sheen trade-off, or do you leave soft-finish pieces raw and tell the client to be gentle with them? Is there a finish I haven't thought of that keeps the flat look but still holds up? Genuinely torn here.
