The sensor works in a retro reflective fashion. The distance to the reflector is taught by grounding a fourth wire and when the sensor can not see this distance (ie object in the way) it will generate an output. This means that the shape of the object is not a problem. For a reflective ultrasonic the shape is indeed important, but as long as the "reflector" is perpendicular it will sense any object.
