Is it best to sweep it across the area on each pass, gradually increasing the pressure, or is it best to focus on an area until the required depth is reached and then to shift to an adjacent area etc? jmc

Crank in the pressure until the knurl is cutting to full depth and pattern, then traverse it across the area to be knurled. In other words, you can't be timid when knurling. You have to crank it. With a light lathe, this is best done with a scissors knurling tool.
