Another solution which should make everybody happy, but also show up the whole nonsense of the pettiness, is to top-post in essence, but to intersperse the top-post in its entirety after the first letter, only, of the quoted material, as in this example. So, this reply is top-posted in essence, but follows all the silly "rules" by being interspersed.
