- You are absolutely right regarding both the leakage reactance and the fields due to polyphase lines. I was taking an extremely favourable approach- where it is still not attractive. I got carried away in that the chance of serious arcing is very low - but the chance of shocking or deadly voltages (i.e. leading to a few ma through one's body) is real and present. I have done calculations of electric field hazards (effectively short circuit current) but have only calculated the open circuit voltages for large loops with one side under the line and the other far from it. Net result-Either capacitive coupling or inductive coupling, done deliberately bu amateurs is safe or effective as a source of useful energy. The utility problem with inductive loops (even if the parallel side is not actually on the towers) is not the energy stolen but the legal costs of trying to prove lack of liability in case of an accident. Facts and court decisions are often quite unrelated.
