pll experts

HI,

I want to build a synchronous, pll based, AM detector. I've been looking at the 7046. It has an edge triggered phase detector that locks up at 0 degrees. If I use this to drive an analog switch, it should demodulate. Here are my questions:

1. Will the 7046 lock well to AM signals?
2. Will it coast through selective fading?
3. Is it difficult to get this part to function?
4. Are there any "tricks" most know from experience with either this application or the 7046?
5. How small of signal can be applied to the phase detector?
