resolution bandwidth

I was just wondering why changing the resolution bandwidth on a number of measurement instruments can change the level of the noise floor.

res bandwidth is the IF bandwidth of the system; if you change it you change the amount of energy that is being sampled by the detector, thus changing the noise floor.
