Abloy question

I have a few of their cam locks that I bought cheap on ebay and they keys and lock face both have a 4 character number stamped in them. I assume somebody could have a key made from this number. Isn't this a little less than secure??

AFAIK Abloy do not number ordinary cylinders and keys. Could they be part of a masterkeyed set? If so keys could only be made by looking up the bitting records for the specific set and Abloy or whoever set up the system would not create unauthorised keys.

these are definitely factory numbered because the boxes have the same number.

it would possibly be that 'original purchaser' got them from Abloy, say as part of a whole building job, and Abloy 'numbered them' for the customers convenience.. IE 4375 is a keyed alike set for use at location... and 4452 is another KA set, for use at....

but it has nothing to do with the code, as such

Masterkeying can be done at the factory. That the boxes are numbered too indicates that this is a batch of cylinders made up for a specific original client.

The question arises whether the E-bay vendor had any right to possess or sell these cylinders.
