How Many Car Openings?

How many car openings does the average shop do in a month? Do you feel these calls lead to other types of calls increasing your bottom line?

Depends on the shop, how they advertise.

Do you feel

No.

Car openings and pick opens hardly ever lead to more work. Car openings are the worst. The customer will hardly ever call you back because when they call you they just want in their car, nothing more. If you give them a card it will most likely get thrown away and the next time they lock themselves out of their car they will open up the yellow pages and call a locksmith just like they did the first time. The only exception to this is if they cant find their key when you open it.

If your looking to increase your bottom line by getting more of a customer base without incresing your advertising budget then look at commercial locksmithing to bring repeate customers in.

month?

the average will vary depending on many factors. we do different figures in any given month. last month we did 135 openings. the month before I believe it was around 180

many shops do a lot more.

increasing your bottom line?

DEFIANTLY !!!

if I was to drive about 2 hours s of me, into NW Arkansas to a town, the 'smith there sometimes does over a hundred a DAY, in the summer.. another town little SSE of me, about 50 miles, pop of under

8,000, has 7 MILLION visitors a year.. the 3 shops there stay busy... it totally depends on YOUR area.

Where I work the number of car openings can vary widely. I've had months were I personally have probably done less than 10, and I've also had days when the ONLY thing I have done is open cars. If I were going to do a rough estimate I'd say my shop probably averages 30-75 car openings a month, but we have a lot of "$20 Lockout" services to compete with, and $20 doesn't even cover our travel charge.

Do these calls lead to more business? Not usually. Most people don't even get a spare key cut while I'm there, or buy a Hide-A-Key. But some people do ask for a card, and some of them do call with other work.

For repeat business commercial is the way to go. If you treat them right and do good work your business custormers will call you for their personal stuff too, and/or recommend you to their neighbors when they need lock work done. Word of mouth is just as valuable as a yellow page ad.

Maybe 1 or 2.

No.

However, I have learned never to give anyone a discount cause they say "I'm a [fill in] and can get you a lot more work."

the moron..i eman morman...LOL..that posted a reply to this guys legit questions says he only does ONE or TWO car openings a month???LMFAO..what the hell kinda shop you running???lol..1 or 2..hey bonhead,go back to church, this guy asked a REAL lock-jock how many car openings they did a month..they didnt need an answer from a guy who bought a car opening kit at the dollar store, and thought cuz he got a "slim jim" and a wedge he was a locksmith!!!...lol..,one or two...why dont you try NOT working from mommy's garage, get yourself an actual store front..advertise and maybe then you'll do a hell of alot more business...I would GUESS that on the average...the ACTUAL REAL lockshop that advertises, and actually KNOWS how to open a car without damaging it,(most these clowns think a slim jim still works with the newer vehicles...LOL)..I would venture a guess that MOST...(NOT all) but most probably do about (and this of course is depending on YOUR seasons)...most likely about 10-15 car openings a month, maybe more, maybe less, but I would guesstimate that the REAL STOREFRONT lock jock does approx this many..(of course it may be alot more if you live in a vacation area!!!)

I do 1 to 3 a month maybe. And _only_ if a) they're less than 5-10 minutes away, and b) I have nothing better to do. $55 (daytime) is hardly worth the drive. Plus I might miss a good call.

If anybody asks for a discount because they can get me a lot of work, I tell them I have plenty of work already. (Just to see the "What do I say now?" look on their face.)

the big town to my east, 14 locksmiths, charge $25 to open a car, daytime.. EXCEPT FOR ! shop.. they get $75. they dont WANT to waste the time, opening a car and they flat tell you to call one of the other shops.. I have HEARD THO, that exceptions ARE made, and price reduced IF you are one of their corporate account customers. --Shiva--
