removing older motorcycle column lock (lost keys)

I lost my motorcycle key... okay, okay, I'm a dumbass, I know I should have had more than one key for it but I recently purchased a 1980 Yamaha XS650 and it only came with one key.

It now sits, steering column locked, in my garage.

My specific question is: with the column locked, is it possible to remove the lock mechanism from the motorcycle? As I understand it, the column lock engages a pin of some sort into the frame of the bike. I'd like to be able to remove the lock mechanism to either a) read the code off of it or b) take it to a locksmith to get a new key made.

Also, does anyone know if this vintage yamaha uses the same lock on the helmet lock and gas tank? They open with the same key, but I don't know if the steering lock has more or less wafers or pins. The tank cap would be the easiest to remove, but I'm guessing it probably is a simpler mechanism.

Any help greatly appreciated.

But my guess is that it's a lot of work to get a column lock to come off.

CY: My experience is that the steering and ignition lock has all the tumblers, and that the helmet and gas tank locks only have a few of them.

Any help greatly appreciated. CY: Many locksmiths offer mobile service. I know I do.... but not to BC. Sorry. But, many locksmiths can recreate the key for you.

All the locks use the same key but the seat and tank locks don't have all wafers. The early XS650's have the steering lock at the top of the fork and secured by two countersink screws which are covered when the lock is locked. Your best bet here is to remove the seperate ignition switch and get a key made to fit (switch has plug in connecters and can be removed in a few minutes}. If all else fails then cut the steering lock off with an angle grinder. Later Yamahas have the steering lock as part of the ignition switch assembly {push and turn}; a major pain to dismantle.
