stress and force

i am wondering why stress is used in elasticity instead of more natural approach of using force ( for e.g in Hooke's law).

could anybody clarify

Stress and force area related by geometry. Using stress makes most of your work geometry independant, which is easier when doing general treatments of things. Virtually all material properties are given in terms of stress, not force, for that reason.

When you're working with specific geometries, such as in an FEM analysis, you do use force.
