I would imagine it is because these oils give such awful fuel consumption figures ! Most modern engines are designed to work with much thinner oils, such as 5W/20, 5W/30, 10W/30 grades.

No it's the wide viscosity oils that allow the tighter clearances... Put old style W 60 in a modern engine and it simply will not be able to start.
Actually you don't want your clearances to tight, a larger clearance gives a freer running bearing.
