Why so cranky tonight, Sable dearie? Can't bear the fact Mort knows you're a drunken, syphilis ridden old hag? :)

Something that bugs me is, do chinese use their cheapo stuff they sell in the West in their own shops, or do they save the profits to buy themselves nice stuff?

It's a mixture. If you want a real feet-on-the-ground answer, go over to alt.machines.cnc and ask hamei. He's been there, off and on, for years. He runs a small plant there.

Also, Santa Cruz Mike, from the same NG, just did what the guy in your article is thinking of doing. I haven't heard from him; he's probably getting himself settled in.

There are European and Japanese machine tool builders in China, making good stuff. A couple of years ago a top Charmilles official here told me their China-made EDMs were very close in quality to the ones they make in Switzerland. And they cost about 1/3 as much, I've been told by others.

Do you mean cheapo stuff like Black & Decker tools?

Interesting that they don't cost 1/20th any more! What's going on here, Ed?
