Dead Radial Arm Saw

Sounds like my lathe did. Marty came by and discovered a capacitor lead was bad. A new capacitor soon cured the problem. Thanks very much Marty.

Open the case - the centrifigal throwout switch is either broken or thrown off it's mount... I've got two Sears radial arms saws here from yard sales, almost free that came in with the same problem - blew the trip/wouldn't start.

Took about 30 mins to get the case off, blow it out, and put the centrifigal start switch back to where it belongs... Also on one the start cap eventually fried and smoked, replaced that... also inside the case.

Hi Guys, Nice to get so much good advice and thanks. I did take the motor apart, it sure is different than any other motor I had apart. It had no smell. It was full of sawdust so I blew it clean with my air hose. The starter contacts are enclosed in plastic so you cannot get to them. It was clean in there but it is not air tight. I sprayed some contact cleaner in there at the top and it ran right down and out the bottom. I will certainly have another look at it and I have tracked down a few shops that specialize in small motors. I will certainly not give up till I have at least one more so call expert look at it. Gee, that means I have to take it to somebody further than

50 miles because an expert is somebody that is at least 50 miles from home. The bearings do seem like they are a little hard turning but I never turned it without a saw on so I do not have anything to compare. I did not have the time to look at it this week, was too busy cleaning snow. I really should drop everything, dig out my sketches and start that snowblower I have been wanting to build. I sure will have it for next winter, getting too old for that manual shovel.

Thanks again, and happy holidays to all.

Eric

it's nice to actually hear back from folks asking for advice, too infrequent here, imho. lot's of "thanks", but no details.

if you have to blow snow, just buy a Toro 12" electric for the walks, you will use that even after you have a big one. they work, i know. meanwhile, fix the damn motor and let us know how it goes. --Loren

Most common problem on 20-25 year old RAS with real AC motor (not the cheap universal brush type) is a bad start capacitor. Replace it - larger value rather than smaller if the identical cap cannot be found.
