First time tapping on my CNC

From this, and your previous post, I can see that you are an avid collector of all things "Machining". Fun, isn't it! I surely am enjoying picking up all the tapping info. There's a whole bunch of things to learn.

Thats good to hear. To tell the truth I was just thinking about how I could make tapered collets if I needed them and I thought I could just chuck up some old brass stock I have in my mill and just turn the OD tapers right off of vector CAD. Probably a hell of a lot easier then trying to do it on a lathe. I could make a bunch of blanks and drill them to fit whatever shanks I needed. But Straight is good! (O:

I'll give you a big amen on that, and Can post only charges $5.00 for brokerage. A sight better then $35 for the same service from UPS (Plus the cost of shipping.)

These are generally lighter than the tapping head, though.

Yep -- within the limits of what I can fit in what used to be the garage. :-) things like a vertical turret lathe are rather beyond my storage capabilities. :-)

Always! And a lot of it can be learned by picking up used equipment at eBay prices, and playing with them until you can make them work.

My Procunier 15000 tapping head arrived in good shape but the collets are for a larger unit #8 #10 1/4 3/8 5/16 that are 0.5" OD and 1.5 long, look very good.

The two wrenches are marked Procunier but they are to large to fit the

15000.

The spring loaded shank looks to well done to be something done by anyone less then a professional. (a perfectionist in fact)

I'll have no problem making the collets for this unit. (thanks for the steer.)

A question or two though

Oil ------- I see that the 15000 calls for 5-10 W but I do not have an oilier that would act well on the spring loaded ball type oiling point. Do you think I would do well by removing the lower screw on the anti rotation bracket and gave a good shoot in through that screw hole??

Locking detent???? The spring loaded anti rotation slide has a ramp surface that acts on a detent on the body of the unit (near the top) that locks the shank from rotating. I think it is meant to lock up everything during a tool change so that the tapper will go back in, in the same attitude that it was removed.. BUT I DON'T REALLY KNOW. I do know that if you do not force the slide down a bit the spindle will not be able to turn the shank. and all hell would break lose! (o:
