"[T]he Clinton administration launched an attack on people in Texas because those people were religious nuts with guns. Hell, this country was founded by religious nuts with guns.\ Who does Bill Clinton think stepped ashore on Plymouth Rock? Peace Corps volunteers? Or maybe the people in Texas were attacked because of child abuse. But, if child abuse was the issue, why didn't Janet Reno tear-gas Woody Allen? -- P.J. I don't see why you want to go and thank him for his unhelpful attitude on this important matter. That might encourage him in his bad habit of leaving out the "--" separation line.

It's "-- " - the trailing space is required.

If Agent newsreader doesnt put it in, then I figure it shouldnt be there. Shrug. Is there an option for this in Agent?

I'm pretty sure that Agent 1.93 and earlier won't insert a separator as separate function; you'd need to type "-- " as the first line of your sig. There's a blurb on this in the Agent help file. I don't know about Agent 2.0.

See "son of RFC 1036" (internet draft) for more info on the suggested character sequence.

It is supposed to be *two* dashes, followed by a space (and nothing else) all on a single line.

And even if done right, it may not look different to you, but it will to some software.

Enjoy, DoN.

Some people object to *long* .sig files, which I assume is the reason for wanting to remove them. Yours do tend to be longer than most. IMHO a good .sig line should contain about as much text as a bumper sticker.

The original purpose of a .sig file was to provide an alternate bang-path for email replies, in case the one in the header didn't work. This became obsolete when DNS was invented. Some people now use them to advertise their web pages, which shouldn't require more than a line or two. Quoting whole paragraphs unrelated to the topic at hand seems excessive.

Some of us had three or four email addresses in different formats. !path was one but so was IBM and ...... formatting. Others were fax company and creative types had trains, rockets, ships, cars etc. Long time with various types of comm.

The "officially accepted" limit is 3 or 4 lines as I recall.

Which also opens the door to bottom poster arguments...

The cut mark is {dash dash space CR/LF("Enter")} on the first otherwise blank line of the sig-file, then it works perfectly. It doesn't need to look like anything to /you/, but when Agent or Outhouse Express sees that mark as you hit "Reply", it knows what to do - strip the .sig off.

If people don't snip the junk out when they reply to stuff, you soon get monster 500-line posts. Big bandwidth waster.

(BTW, Still could use the compressor, but take a couple of close-ups of the pump (including casting marks) to see if the make and model can be ID'd for repair parts. It's a whole lot simpler faster and cheaper to buy the part than make it from scratch, and the repair is more reliable than if you cobble something together. Been there, dealt with that...) ;-)

In a world with thousands of active binary newsgroups, sig lends nothing to bandwitch considerations.

Ill do that this weekend.

Ya?

Not Reply Group anyways...

As for OE's *insertion*, the standard "-- " is placed before the sig text/file in all groups. It isn't added for mail (reply/forward/new e-mail, etc.).

It does on news servers (such as mine) which refuse to carry the binaries newsgroups *because* of the bandwidth. Many business systems which carry newsgroups as a perk for their employees also refuse to carry binaries. And the .mil system which I used to admin got its feed from another .mil site, which absolutely refused to carry *any* alt.* newsgroups.

A few years ago, the full news feed passed the threshold which

*two* T1 lines could carry. And it had historically doubled every year.

And a news server accepting only non-binary newsgroups can take all of *them* with lots of bandwidth left over on a single T1.

One of the configuration files for newservers has descriptions for each newsgroup and each heirarchy level. alt.binaries.* is simply described as "gigabytes of copyright violations", which can be another reason for some news servers to not carry them (aside from the bandwidth and the humongous disk space required -- even with a 24-hour expire time. With the restricted newsgroup list, I can set 30-day expires on newsgroups of special interest to me, and still have lots of disk elbow room on that one partition.

Enjoy, DoN.
