Is there a chemical methodology for darkening stainless?

Yes. It is similar to the hot bath bluing for carbon steel except the bath chemicals are different. The bath converts the chrome on the surface of the SS to chrome sulphide. It is used by gunsmiths to blacken SS firearms.
