Just returned from pricing the two units. 380 says it will cut 3/8, and 600 says it will cut 5/8.
I notice that they also have a line that says something like max cut is " ............" , I guess meaning what it will cut in a bind. I may occasionally cut 1/2", but not much. Will the 380 suffice, or should I go ahead on the 600 and have wiggle room? And if I DO select the 600, will it be overkill and melt all the small thin stuff?

Well, then, it looks like the 600. Or maybe the 1000. But then, wait ......... maybe I should just get something that will cut 3" plate in case I ever need it ....................
I hate growing out of tools. What I hate worse is not buying enough tool in the first place.

Well, then you obviously need something bigger... Like those found in shipyards that have run under water 'cause the noise from them will liquefy protoplasm...
I used to be a commercial diver. We used an electric torch, 300 amps DC with 60# over bottom pressure shot down the middle of the tubular rod. It sounded like coffee percolating underwater. It was frightening to watch it cut. We trained on railroad rails in school, cutting them out of water. Made a real racket. Using it underwater was infinitely quieter.
