It is quite clear from the data you present that your problem is with your experiment, not with the scale. When an instrument doesn't read what you expect it to read, that doesn't necessarily mean that the instrument is faulty. Your tests with blocks of wood (independent test mass, regardless of material) indicate that the scale does return to zero when unloaded.

Still it's pretty weired that when I do the same experiment but with a plastic surface, the scale doesn't return to zero when unloaded.

One possibiity is that the plastic has a staic charge. That can throw off a sensitive balance, although not by much.

Some scales are programmable for doing counting parts or some other multible measurment task. I would RTFM.
