Monarch 10EE lathe

I am considering the purchase of a used and abused Monarch 10EE lathe for restoration. In gathering the pertinent considerations for this project, I wonder if some comments can be extended my way to give me perspective on what I might be getting into. Generally speaking, I would think that at worst, the bedways would be worn out and I might have to have them reground. What is the cost of that job and are there any reputable companies in LA that do good work? I may need to replace the spindle bearings if out of tolerance. I would probably forsake the hydraulic drive and use 3 phase motor with VFD to power it. Paint restoration of course. This would be a no rush project for the long term, the idea being to learn and keep, the last lathe I purchase if I'm lucky. What do you think, am I dreaming?



I had recently purchased a Sheldon 12 inch shaper. I thought about picking it up by trailer and using a pallet jack to move it around and get it to my garage. Any suggestions on that?



Most times I've posted, I have had some people with harsh opinions. I do not mind, I extract the most useful advise and use it as intended so bring on the comments please.



No..a very doable idea. Its not gonna be an easy task..but a worthwhile one if you have the time and money.

Getting it into and out of the properly rated trailer..how will you accomplish that?

I'm a proud 10EE owner. One of the finest lathes ever built. The ways are flame hardened, most machines don't seem to wear at all here. Be forewarned that new parts from Monarch cost a FORTUNE. There's been a number of folks part out 10EEs on Ebay and make a lot of bucks - way more than the cost of a used machine.

A VFD drive is the way to go. You can use a five horse three phase motor and keep the existing backgear. Its a bit of a job fitting this to a new motor. If I were to do a 10EE again, I'd go with a larger motor, 10hp, and do away with the backgear.

Isn't that a coincidence? I have a 10 hp motor and a 20hp motor that I was intending on creating a rotary converter with. Interesting suggestion on the use of raw hp to bypass the multiplicative advantage of the backgear. Encouraging also to know that the tendency for wear at the ways are less likely, I found that intimidating if I had to deal with the cost of regrinding the ways. The other consideration is that the compound slide is said to need work which has been "started" but not concluded. I could infer that some sort of regrind on it may be needed somehow. The seller is supposed to take a closer look today and give further information. Stand by and we shall see. Thanks for the remarks.

To remove it from a trailer, I would personally use an automotive engine hoist. I'd sling it using webbed slings, 2 of 'em, under the base. A couple of years ago, Karl sent in a piece re. the 10EE motor replacement. If I remember correctly, Karl installed a new VFD driven motor within the shell of the old, original 10 HP DC motor. That was a class piece of work ! I suggest the OP contact Karl for details. A rebuild of an OE DC or hydraulic drive Monarch 10EE puts a new spin on the definition of "daunting task".

You have a good memory, Bob. I'd be glad to share this method, if needs be. If I were doing it again, I'd just install a 10 HP VFD and 3 phase motor, no backgear. The old motor and backgear will sell on ebay for more than the cost diffenrence.

If the shaper weighs just 800 lbs, the best thing to use is a "shop crane" on casters, which can easily handle that much. They are $150 at Harbor Freight and are a worthwhile investment. Just make sure that your cradle is secure and the shaper cannot fall out of it when lifted.

Lift the shaper, drive the trailer underneath it (making sure not to drive over the legs of the crane), and lower it. Strap it well to the trailer. Reverse the process when you get home.

Should take you about 40 minutes, not counting the time to disassemble the crane.

Should be an easy job if your surface is level. 800 lbs is not much, though it requires respect.

I don't think it's different from any long-term restoration project. The questions you have to ask yourself are:

Can I afford to loose the floor space that the device and it's parts will take up for a long time?

Will I have the time, patience and money to see the project through? Will my wife have the patience to let me spend the money and listen to my bitching while I see the project through?

Will it be worth it in the end?

If the answers are yes, then by all means, go at it. Every time I look at a restoration project, too many of them are no.

You could do worse than to post a query over at the Practicalmachinist forum, as well. There is a sub forum there dedicated to the Monarch lathes and the knowledge base is pretty good.

I will consider that technique. I do have a cherry picker but it is a chinese one, I have a tingle of mistrust about lifting 800# with it although I lifted a Cybertig 300 off of my truck bed. And yes, that is the shaper I got, I'm excited about it! Thanks for the advise.

I saw a large Monarch at an auction that was said to have made torpedos. They are highly regarded as competing with the Hardinge HLV as the finest precision lathes for instrument work.

According to a no longer available article by Jim Kizale the Hardinge replaced the South Bend Heavy 10 like mine at the US National Bureau of Standards. He thought the South Bend was more versatile and nearly as accurate. Mine unfortunately went to a trade school where it was abused, though I've made some military and space program prototypes on it.
