More motor issues

I think that I understand the story a little better.

There is some play in the shaft so that it slides back and forward by about 3 mm or so.

If I pull it back, the motor starts fast, however. if I pull it forward the motor starts very poorly. This is, no doubt, due to the positioning of start winding switch.

I am not sure why there is so much play, I doubt that it is normal.

Bearings?

Sounds like you need to install a larger motor anyway.

often there are some shims or spring washers - a prior owner could have attempted repair and lost them

I will see. This may be a 10 HP compressor that someone tried to use with a 5 HP motor.

I think that the front bearing is incorrect. I spent the morning removing the pulley, which is done by now, I will see what it is and will call Baldor.
