Next tap size up from 3mm

Dec 22, 2005 4 Replies

I need to retap something up to the next closest american thread. It was threaded 3 mm. Would that be a 4-40? Thanks, Ron

3mm is .118". A #5 screw is .125". Randy

Do they make a #5 tap? Would it be hard to find a #5 set screw? Ron

Note that a #8 is the smallest size that will have a core diameter greater than 3mm. This could make for a better thread.

Unless he uses a form tap. 6-32 or 6-40 would be doable. Perhaps an insert could be used. IIRC, the drill size for a 4-40 STItap is right close to 3mm.
