Odd banging sound

My wife and I have been consumed with an odd banging sound lately...

We figured out it was coming from the chimney and only in the morning near dawn. So I turned off the heating system and it still happened, turned off water heater - still happend. Used no water - still happened. Left all the light off - still happened.

We just figured it out - a wood pecker is making love to our metal chimney. The sounding board effect spreads it through the whole house. Guess we have a new alarm clock.

They like to find things that make them sound superior to their neighbor/competitor. It should go away/decrease once mating season is over. In the mean time you can enjoy your new alarm clock :)

Now i understand. I'd bang on it too if I thought it would help to get laid.

Another thing you might try: a toy-store rubber snake. Three or four years ago, we had a bird that would walk along the sill of our living room bay window, pecking at its reflection in the glass. For hours at a time. Until I put a toy snake on the sill.

Around the corner from me is an Victorian era home with a turret on the corner. The turret still has its conical slate roof with a sheet tin cap at the very point. One day, while taking a walk I heard an odd banging. I tracked it down to a woodpecker tapping on the sheet metal cap. You could hear the sound for blocks.

I occasionally have some type of bird pick on my roof, doing what I can only assume to be picking for bugs. Fortunately they are somewhat intelligent birds, so after a few iterations of throwing a handful of gravel at them they don't come back.

Until the next year, of course.

This should be R rated, but it includes banging and teens interacting.

Years ago, I heard the term "peckerwood". Had to research it. Turns out to be a southern term for a poor white man.

There's a downey woodpecker hanging around here. He'll bang on everything, the mailbox, tv antennas, signs, whatever makes the most noise is what he finally settles on. Seems he really likes the trim boards on the back of my shop and just pounds away! He's no bother to me at all, in fact I kinda enjoy it because it won't last. A mate will hear him and show up for a hot date and that's the end of that till next year. ;>)}

What makes your wife romantic? Bang on that!

Well pad yer groins, son!

I had a similar redheaded male woodpecker trying to woo a female here about 5 years ago. It drove me nuts until I figured out what the hell it was. Then it drove me nuts until he got himself laid. Noisy bastids, ain't they? My guy's object of affection was the stove vent cover.

Sorta reminds me of when I moved to Grass Valley in 1980. House I'd rented was new and not finished as the contractor was behind. So a co-worker offered a spare room until it was ready. I'd talked about my competitive target shooting in the bay area, and he mentioned he had a Ruger that couldn't hit anything, let alone the woodpecker banging away on his house now and then. Brought me outside to show the damage, and lordy, there were holes everywhere! I asked how long it'd been doing that to make so many holes. "Oh he's only done some of them, the rest are from me trying to hit the bastard". Geez, must have been close to

100 holes in the side of the house up under the peak! Told me if I ever heard him banging away, I was free to dispatch him at once. I did check out his Ruger btw, it shot right to point of aim, he was just a damned lousy shot... lol

Eh, wasn't my house... He seemed to think the holes were an acceptable trade off if he managed to nail the woodpecker. I never even heard the pest, and probably wouldn't have shot it if I had, unless my host was home and insisted.

Jon

And then PETA or the ASPCA would have you gelded. That's after CalOSHA got done proving that you didn't use safety bullets in the gun and sent the vicious, gun-fearing liberal DA after you. About that time, the regulatory folks from the Endangered Species Act would be on ya...
