Bucket of molasses over the door followed by feathers. Should take some time to get it off. Victim would be readily noticed by most anyone.

Alternatively, is there someplace you can watch the comings/goings from a discrete distance? Rent a van and have someone park it, and leave you inside, or maybe from another business? Don't forget your camera.

If the walls don't give clues, have you checked above 8' and on the roof for access potential?

My dad used a Popular Mechanics (or Pop Sci) article to design an inductive sensor for his yard (cats breaking in) eons ago. (Everyone hates tomcats pissing on the bushes in front of their homes, making them smell like downtown alleys, huh?) He ran a simple wire around the top of his fence perimeter and

Google up "inductive alarm system", Tom. Then build/buy one and use it to rim the building, activating a 5-camera surveillance system on alarm. One camera on each wall outside and one behind the TV to catch _faces_. X-10 will work for a budget system with any old VCR, or send it to the Internet for home monitoring if you're connected at work.

Or "tag" 'em with something like this for tracking.

a 40mm projectile tag might be a bit too much for food theft, but it would certainly get their and their friends' attention.

This might be your way to get away from ADT's bungling:

Rig up something like this to the fridge and cameras so you catch the thieves in the act.

Ultrasonics set up in the fridge area (with cameras/vcr/etc.) will help you catch them on film.

Let us know what you end up with, eh?

My neighbors system was triggered when some mylar helium ballons were floating around at night. In his case, air currents from the heating system were enough to move the ballons and trigger the motion sensor. Perhaps you could rig a fan blowing some helium ballons.

Instead of noise, how about a recording. "Here they come..., you aim for the head, I'll aim for the balls."

How do they get past the door sensors?

---------

Do you know what kind of motion detectors they are -- passive IR (PIR), microwave, ultrasonic or ??? The way to artificially trip one depends on which type it is.

Consumer security companies like ADT want to minimize false alarms, particularly if customers will accept non-response to events that should result in timely and effective response. Your signature on your next check to ADT endorses your continuing acceptance of their non-performance, thank you very much. Easy money for them.

The performance you describe is completely inexcusable. It's time to let ADT know one more failure will result in their termination -- and start shopping now for who might replace them.

I'm not knocking ADT per se. The performance and competence you get depends a lot on the branch office that has your account or region. ADT may be better than competition some places but not in others, ditto their competitors. Your ADT branch office is clearly not providing you with the security you're paying them to provide.

I've done R&D for military, industrial and commercial security gear for a major corp that had such biz in it's collection of bidnesses. The gear works very well if applied properly. I've also accompanied a field installer on a day's work. Man, you do NOT want to see how your $million plus house is built! YOW!

There really are commercial and residential security folks that are as good at security as you are at making brushes. They're price-competitive, and they all use very similar gear. Some technicians just use it better than others.

Just did a googled inductive alarm system and didn't find anything like your dads system. Could you elaborate further on building/making such a system.
