OT: Cylinder Head Replacement

I enjoy reading Rock Auto's 'Repair Mistakes & Blunders'section every couple weeks. This one has me stumpedthough. I don't understand where he went wrong. this edition, Troy in California tells usthat he made a mistake during the installation ofa replacement cylinder head in a early '80's Tercelthat resulted in a snapped cam shaft!He says that he had ¨ignored (or at leastoverlooked) the uneven valve spring pressure on thecam due to the various lobe positions.¨He also said that he had torqued the head boltsproperly, so why would cam angle have anything todo with the effectiveness of the repair?No connection to Rock Auto except as happy customer.--Winston

Thanks, Ted. I suspect, now, that much was edited out of the original story. Gee, engine repair used to be so easy!

Yup. Ed mentioned it. I didn't know that.

Jim reminded us that 'Troy in California' said he had the head rebuilt; the cams were supposedly torqued down properly.

I understand Tercel didn't have an interference engine until '86 - '95. This Tercel was described as 'early 80's' IIRC.

This sort of problem is pretty well documented on straight 6 BMW's. They even have a fancy factory tool to help avoid it.
