OT: Greyhound Shipping

Shipping by bus, terminal to terminal, is pretty cheap- $65 to ship an old ford truck hood from California to Connecticut. Unfortunately, Greyhound's nearest terminal calculation is apparently as the crow flies, so this ebay seller sends my hood to Bridgeport, CT instead of Long Island, completely ignoring the presence of the Long Island Sound. Sounds like Greyhound may forward the item to LI at no extra charge, and I'm in no big hurry, so all is not lost.

Those of you who have bulky, low value items to ship might want to consider using Greyhound- but check on the other end as to which terminal is easiest to get to (by truck, not by plane or boat).

The problem I have had before with Greyhound shipping is that (a) they lose stuff and (b) when they do, you have zero recourse and they have zero accountability. You're just screwed.

Isn't there a ferry across to Bridgeport?

Yes, but it's outrageously expensive and takes hours, as opposed to a half-hour drive to Hempstead in Nassau County. If the hood was offered in Bridgeport I wouldn't even want it. I wasn't aware of their no accountability policy. Just by the nature of the shipping and transfers from one bus to another I figured it would be more appropriate for sturdy, inexpensive items like old sheet metal.

I once put an aged relative on Grayhound. She still hasnt been found. It was 21 yrs ago. I figure there is a desiccated corpse sitting in a Grayhound waiting lobby somewhere, but if you have ever been to a Grayhound waiting lobby..you would know why she hasnt been found yet.....

There's quite a few antique radio afficianados and restorers who swear by using Greyhound for shipping larger consoles. I haven't heard any horror stories, but I'm sure there've been a few. When standard shipping costs exceed purchase price, folks tend to either not purchase or take a calculated risk on Greyhound . It's a viable option I'd consider anyway.

Just another data point, no affiliation, yada, yada.

That was a lot cheaper than a nursing home....

I haven't used Greyhound or Trailways in many years. The urban terminals were pretty down and out, as well as some of the clientele. Town to town in rural areas it was not all that bad at the time.
