My personal struggle with a door spring happened when a big one in a trash-strewn truck dock got wedged between the dual wheels of the truck I was driving. I had to use a rope to tie down one end of the spring while I moved the truck to yank it out.

The (Series II) Land Rover shop manual used to specify an old sock be used to contain the spring which was released when dismantling part of the steering gear. Tie the sock over the end of the casing, & tap out the innards...

Happy New Year to all.

Hot Dawg!!! I stand vindicated!!! Thank YOU Ned!!!

I might add ALL the springs are still attached to the door and working well since they were installed and LEFT THERE in spite of the OOmpaah from the squeakers! Y'know there's the wrong way, the comonsensical way and the OSHA way of doing something . Guess which gets more done..... Glibly adjourning to the shop..... Bill

One thing which is supposed to be common practice with those springs is to run some steel cable down the center to the attachment points. This controls how much the spring can bounce around when it breaks. With the aluminum plug, you lose this -- unless you make it long enough for two eyes to be screwed in from both ends -- one goes to the garage door -- the other to one end of the restraining cable.

Enjoy, DoN.

what was the brand of lawnmower? i was just looking at the recall list on the

website and they had a recall on honda lawnmowers because of a fuel tank leak problem. i was amazed at how many other recalls are out there. snowmobiles with sticky throttles, with leaky fuel tanks. there was a counterfeit "square D" brand circuit breaker that's in recall.

a dewalt cordless drill., it goes on and on. lots of chinese made ATV's. tree stands and a tree stand harness. cummings air compressor (burnt someone's house down) john deere gator utility vehicle. i'm sure there are some who'd say the recalls are akin to the lady getting burned by mcdonald's coffee, but if the OP's lawnmower is on the recall list it would be nice to get a replacement tank for free. (i was just thinking about the post about the broken magnesium bicycle wheel bracket. THAT dang thing looked to me to be just a POOR design. no way you can expect magnesium or aluminum to hold up with that tapped hole drilled in it.) timberland steel toed boots.
