please help me find foot operated valve

Call me crazy but I seem to recall that you can purchase foot-actuated sink fixtures from McMaster Carr. At one time they were in the catalog, two pedals mounted under the sink, one hot and one cold.

The sink faucet sounds like a Chicago faucet. Tried them? They make many institutional type products

Don't they use something like this in hospitals? Turning the water on and off by foot so you don't get your freshly-scrubbed hands dirty. No ideas where you could buy one, though, but you could try asking the maintenance crew in your local hospital.

They're still there, I just ran across them today while shopping for a foot operated air valve, but I think Eric is looking for something that has a metered shot mode of operation.

They use foot pedal operated sink faucets in Hospitals all the time. Call a large local Plumbing wholesale house, they will know where to get them, and usually fast - but they are going to be commercial duty items, meaning not cheap.

Those things were prone to problems (both jamming and leaks) and had to have plumbing out under the floor where a leak could be a serious problem. The IR sensor technology is actually a much better system and there are several versions out there. I suspect you could find one that you like. Another option is a Moen Riser tap that has the control off to the side where you can adjust it with a elbow/forearm while washing. It has the added advantage of lifting up about 12" which means you can get a 5 gallon bucket under it. I got one for the kitchen to help with my beer brewing but it's turned out to have lots of uses.

Thanks Jm, I figured that there were problems with a floor mounted valve but hoped they were still available. I really dislike the IR operated valves for several reasons. Sloan Valve makes a push button operated flusher. I'm gonna see if it can be adapted for my wants. If not, I'll just buy the button and make my own valve. Since the house is going to be built over a basement there will be no problems gaining access to the valve in the floor. Or, maybe another good solution is to buy the IR valve and just mount a switch in the floor thereby dispensing with the IR switch. ERS

If your toilet has a tank on it you might be able to mount a compressed air cylinder ( or an electro-mechanical actuator ) inside the tank to "push the button"... connect it to the appropriate footswitch and you should be ready...

Hmm ... I sort of like thinking about an IR sensor on the sink valve. We've got a cat who likes to hop up onto the sink and bat small things off it to the floor. Having the water spontaneously turn on when she hops up might discourage her. :-)

I've decided the best solution is to use the solenoid valves and use a foot switch instead of the IR control. With a mod to the right kind of faucet it can be used with both the regular handles and the solenoid valve. ERS

It's a great idea. I would put a bypass around the normally closed solenoid valve, so that you can run the sink if the power fails. Otherwise leave the bypass closed, and the regular sink faucets open to the point where you get an appropriate flow.

Actually, my scheme is to use a faucet where the water is mixed in a chamber just below the spout inlet. I'll drill and tap a hole there for the water from the solenoid valve. ERS
