Steel Jewelry

I've been peddling rings on ebay made of stainless. Someone has asked if I could make one that 'sticks to a magnet'. What would the side effects be of making it out of CRS? I would think the oils in the skin would keep it from rusting. Skin discoloration? Rash?

Anyhow, I have no desire to get into a bunch of engineering or fancy material aquisition for a $25 one shot.

And if you want to see the ring, check the link below. It's the wedding band. Thanks.

Bill:

There is a magnetic stainless alloy, don't know if it's sticky enough. It may be the 400 series? Somebody else here could tell you in a heartbeat.

My own personal nickname is "work hardener" so I still shy away from SS.

Years & years ago I had a heavy "pull chain" neclace that my mom gave to me. It was plated. Once the plating wore off it became uncomfortable to wear, kind of a constant irritation. And I am not prone to allergies.

There are, and I keep forgetting, 3 or 4 metals that are magnetic. Iron, cobalt, and nickel for a start I think.

Ferro-magnetic, that's right.

Manganese is, if suitably diluted. Some Mn based bronzes show ferromagnetism, apparently.

as a kid, about 40-45 yrs ago i remember one of the kids who had a nut, probably stainless, looked like stainless... he worked it with a file for a long time and made a ring out of it.. well now into his late 50's i saw him the other day and he is still wearing the same homemade ring.. dont know what it is and he probably does not know either............

I think it would rust, and that there'd be skin discoloration. Don't know many people who are allergic to iron though. Why don't you just use

400 series stainless. That is magnetic.

Some people seem prone to causing rust on steel through contact. There was a machinist who worked for a friend of mine who left rusty fingerprints on most anything he touched.

17-4 PH stainless steel would be another possibility. It's magnetic, machines pretty well, and is generally more corrosion resistant than the 400 series, though whether it'd be better or worse in that regard as jewelry I couldn't say.

Doesn't it hurt to work your nut with a file?

Eide LOL! sorry I just couldn't resist!

Why would a customer care whether his ring is magnetic? Is he planning to have to fish it out of the toilet?

I've got an iron one, that was lined with sterling silver to keep my finger from turning brown. It wouldn't appeal to the general public methinks.

Maybe it's some kind of kinky smarium-cobalt bondage thing.

Maybe the ring doesn't go on the persons finger.

I just don't want to have to hunt the stuff down, buy what ever quantity I have to buy, and get it shipped here for a one-off $25.00 job.

I once worked somewhere where they were having problems with certain parts rusting in certain areas, and it had just started happening after I returned from a 9 month absence. They (supervisors, shop manager, etc) seemed to be running out of possible causes for the rusting and someone mentioned that maybe it had to do with me being back. I was a deburrer, and we handled this particular part quite a bit. We had a good laugh about it - thought they were full of crap and desperate for

*anything* to blame it on. Guess there may have been some truth to it after all... Hopefully not though - I can't see that as a very desirable trait for a machinist. :P

Grab yer handy magnet and head for the wife's cutlery drawer. There's probably something in there that's 400 series stainless.

There is supposed to be some truth in this.

Huh? Y'mean it's attracted to ferrets?

Between that and the samarium/cobalt bondage thing, you're on a real roll tonight, Jim. ;)

What about the Canadian engineers' "iron ring"? I believe it is truly made out of iron(or at least steel). I have met several Canadian's with the ring, and while I have not tried it with a magnet it does seem to be a steel or iron type material.

None of them seemed to have a rusting problem. Not sure if it is lined, but may have. It's been awhile since I have seen one.

The other kind of magnetism is of course, possum-magnetic.

That would be me. It's iron (definitely strongly magnetic).

The one I have is 2nd generation (belonged to an old pal's dad, I lost my original one). The dimples are pretty much worn off the surface. Newer ones are all stainless steel.

Here's what they look like (wrinkles are slightly exaggerated!)

A rust layer builds up inside which protects it, but it still makes your finger brown.

I may have the only one in existence. Since it was a hand-me-down, it was too big. We had a jeweler add the lining. He was a bit reluctant until I established my bona fides as an engineer.
