Surface grinder downfeed creeps - is this normal?

I am trying to come to terms with my new 80 year old surface grinder. It is Robot; apparently a copy of a B&S #2 grinder. The downfeed is on a wheel at the top of the column; which is about 6ft high. There is a thumbwheel for locking the handwheel shaft, so does this mean that one needs to lock the downfeed after each adjustment to prevent downward creep?

I, too have an 80 year old surface grinder. The downfeed doesn't creep and normally it doesn't have any sort of lock for the shaft.

Having the downfeed creep sure sounds like a scary proposition!

My grinder is a 1935 Gallmeyer and Livingston. When I got it, (8 or

10 years ago) I ordered a complete manual from them. It was $75.00, but well worth it.

Are you sure that the "hand-wheel lock" you mention isn't the hand-wheel ring scale adjustment lock, most often used to set the "Zero" point?

And it should NOT drift down.

Sounds like the spindle bearings are probly shot--what with sparkout taking what seems to be taking forever.....

I haven't heard of a surface grinder with downfeed creep - do you actually see this symptom, or are you just trying to figure out what the button might do? I think it's probably just to lock the index ring on the downfeed wheel so you can zero it if you like. I never bother to zero mine out, just use that ring to set my downfeed increments ..

I saw a robot at an auction a while back. What country were they made in?

I had one of those ,Tighten the knob so you have a little drag on it, you don't have to lock it down, just in case there is a little creep in it,

Nope, it isn't an indexing ring lock, it locks the shaft itself.

I don't have mine up and running yet - but is the verticle driven by Hydro ? is there a leak and nominal drive ? or is it weight vs. resistance.

Is the fluid the correct one - might not be.
