Aldi returns

I had a pleasant surprise today when I took something back to Aldi on the basis that it was 'not fit for purpose'.

The article in question was a 'cheapo' hacksaw bought at the same time as I bought one of the ultrasonic cleaners. When I finally got round to taking a good look at it last weekend I found that not only was the blade alignment poor but there was an absence of blade tension and no discernible means of adjusting tension.

As seems to be always the situation in such cases I had not kept the receipt and had I not been passing the door would have been prepared to cut my losses. Thus to be given a full refund without quibble or question was a pleasant surprise and of itself would probably have been enough to prompt a comment on this NG.

But there was a bonus. In the absence of a receipt I have no exact recollection of the price of the hacksaw other than it was ridiculously cheap. My expression of mild surprise at being refunded more than I had expected was greeted by a comment to the effect that that was the amount the till scanner said it should be. Purely out of respect for those in the long check-out queue behind me, you must understand, I chose not to argue the point.

Oddly, I bought the cheap hacksaw at the same time as the cleaner and also had cause to return it (it broke when I tried to twist the blade). A refund was given without any problem.

I've just bought one of their 720W generators for under £60. Looks solid enough and has a 3 year guarantee.

Also, in many of the "down market shops" you find unhelpful staff- not so in our local Aldi, which is staffed by very nice people. I only shop for DIY bargains and sometimes PC bits, so I don't know what the other goods are like.

I can only comment on smoked salmon, smoked mackerel and Parma ham (impulse buys to earn brownie points from 'er indoors) - admittedly not the usual stuff one would expect to buy at a cheap-jack but all found to be good quality and exceptional good value. Some of the food labels (e.g. use by dates) would seem to indicate a German connection, which might explain some of it. Putting aside the usual jokes about sun-lounger wars, the Germans are not known for being slow when it comes to demanding good quality catering and making sure that they get it.

The Cheltenham branch is advertising for an assistant manager and I was surprised at the salary level (high). Perhaps this may go toward explaining the quality of staff that they seem to manage to attract.

I wouldn't wounder. The ALDI-brothers are Germans. One has ALDI north, the other one ALDI south in Germany.

LOL! No joke!

BTW: ALDI south (Germany) has the ultrasonic cleaner (a thread in this NG) in his program today.

Tsk - this is not the way to do it. You should have ranted on the newsgroup about the quality of the item, sworn never to go near the store again and finally tossed the whole thing into the nearest bin. No _REAL_ engineer would be satisfied by a swift and polite refund as per the consumer act, let alone a bonus.

Sounds familiar! Have you also encountered someone who happens to live in a large town in Wiltshire by any chance?

Those who are too stupid to even remember their childish attempts to insult from only 4 days previously had better exercise caution when posting to Usenet....

Naw, I'm not a social misfit. Only somebody who does illegal CB-ing and takes out a G7 could warrant that description.
