Bridgeport Clones - buying Tips

Aug 10, 2005 0 Replies

Hi all, hope you are all well

I'm off next week to "look" at a couple of Bridgeport clones with the intention of replacing my small mill-drill, any tips on what sort of things to look for after the obvious damage/corrosion.

I am particularly interested in the wear on the slideways and how to properly gauge it. The two previous machines I've looked at both tightened away from the centre of the table travel, should I expect all of them to do this? One of the sellers was not too happy with me adjusting the gibs to test for this (obvious reason when I did it) but will I upset most dealers if I try this or is there another way to check out slides? I am using the machine for normal model engineering/repair activites - should I be overly worried about slide wear?

Any tips would be mush appreciated

Best regards

Keith
