Nick, my thanks for the information. Quite simply we were screwed up and almost missed getting to the booked Campanile in time. Ok, I am a more than fair navigator but we were really jammed up. It does suggest that I re-route or leave Austria( Berwang) much earlier in the day.

Reroute only if you can make it through Italy (crossing Milano, or Milan as I think you say, or Mailand as we say), if the destiny is in the very south of France. Don't try to cross Austria in east-west direction. Or you'll be lost (don't ask again). The alps are simply a pain if you want to make miles er.. kilometers!
Or much later. Depending wether you can/like to drive during the night.

Points taken but we live in Newcastle upon Tyne and use Le Shuttle sous La Manche! So we have to keep a North heading. The Sat Nav and Autoroute give the crossing of the Rhine at D500 but I seriously thought of doing a bit of cross country between there and Karlsruhe.
Once we did the Little St Bernard from Bourg St Maurice, the top of Italy and up North via the Brenner to Innsbruck and on.
We were avalanched on the way!( lawinen?) Have a 'broom cupboard' in Les Arcs 1800- incidentally.
The odd mountain doesn't bother either of us.
My old mate was ' JaegerKorps'- Austria's Olympic Reserve skier Nothing to do with Model Engineering but just a quiet chapter. I wasn't always a doddering 77 year old in a shed- with a Shumatech.

In my limited experience of France, they all (well, most) go on holiday at the end of July for the whole month, and go home on 31 August or so. Traffic on French roads on the nearest Friday/Saturday is appalling. Maybe it was all the French families doing this, or maybe it's the same in Germany.

David, they go at the Carthorse July and as you enfer(?) return apres les vacances on the 31th. However we were going the 'wrong way'. Again, probably Nick is right in German, Dutch, Mayonaise holidays but this was going out of Germany into France and thence to Cuckooclockland- and on to the Vatican.I seriously think it was just weekend traffic. Whilst it is OT, it does concern many of us. My wife suggests that we overstay until the Sunday. My thanks to you all
Have you noticed that the signs on pillars haev the welsh at the top, as their language is supposed to be the most important, but is very confusing for us foriegners, but the signs on the road are written so that the english is first, the idiots!
