Already been answered by Lester Caine but if you Google it you get to see current and future offerings, same for ALDI.

This way you don't have to reply on the tom toms and signal fires

Lidl is not an abbreviation, but the last name of Ludwig Lidl, retired teacher. In 1930, Josef Schwarz became a partner in Südfrücht Grosshandel Lidl & Co

Lidl & Schwarz was established in the 1930's source of info:
